Who will ace the race, OpenAI or Google?

ChatGPT has become a hot topic ever since its release in 2021. ChatGPT gained over 100 million followers due to its ability to provide very structured and descriptive content. Many people started using chatGPT and its successor ChatGPT-4 to write articles, messages, poems, emails, and computer code. Further, ChatGPT became virtual support giving life and career guidance to its users. ChatGPT is open to everyone for use.

On the other hand, Google was a silent spectator of all these major changes in AI technology, and now it has unveiled Google Bard, a chatbot that is still in its beta testing phase. This has sparked a debate between both ChatGPT-4 and Google Bard among AI chatbot users.

All these developments in AI technology have made people more curious about the next moves by OpenAI and Google.

ChatGPT-4 or Google Bard, which is better?

ChatGPT-4 was created by San Francisco-based research company OpenAI and Google released the Google Bard with a limited version of its language model. Both AI chatbots are based on Natural language Processing which generates human-like responses.

Technical Comparison of ChatGPT and Google Bard

  1. Language Model – Latest versions of ChatGPT language models are ChatGPT-3 and ChatGPT-4, where GPT stands for Generative Pre-training. Google uses a short Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA).

  1. Data Source – ChatGPT was trained with massive datasets such as Wikipedia, books, blogs, research documents, and conversations of people from the Open Internet. Google chatbot was trained with infinite datasets from the web, including common crawl. Bard is developed to understand the intention behind users’ keys and generate highly-authentic responses.

ChatGPT is designed to generate text functions, whereas Google Bard is focused on generating dialogues and having open conversations with users. ChatGPT’s data source is only limited to information before September 2021. But it has enhanced its data sources with the upgradation in ChatGPT-4.

  1. Internet Access – Google Bard has real-time access to the internet so that it can generate dialogues about the latest events, but the biggest drawback of ChatGPT is no access to the internet, and it doesn’t even know its competitor Google Bard exists.

  1. Coding  – One of the ways many people are using ChatGPT is to write complex codes and debug errors for them. ChatGPT can generate codes in a variety of programming languages.

Google Bard cannot generate codes according to official sources. Few             people having access to Bard could generate codes in HTML and JavaScript, but the code had many errors.

Other Comparisons

  • Bard AI’s conversation sounds like a human response and holds more authenticity in its responses, while ChatGPT-4 provides robotic tone text.

  • ChatGPT-4 is better at writing long articles and emails, while Google Bard gives multiple draft versions of the same answer.

  • ChatGPT can hold conversation memory with the user and can retain up to 3000 words of memory. Google has stated that, currently, Bard cannot retain previous conversations, and it’s very limited.

  • The latest version of ChatGPT, the ChatGPT-4 language model, has over 26 support languages like French, Spanish, Arabic, and Mandarin. Google Bard has only US English as a support language.

  • The basic version of ChatGPT is free to access, and ChatGPT-4 is only accessible for ChatGPT plus users. As per the sources, Google Bard can be free for its users.

Scope of AI

There is no doubt ChatGPT and Google Bard are new-age innovations in AI technology; both have some commonalities and technical differences. Till now, ChatGPT-4 has gained more popularity and reliability, having many advantages over Google Bard. Google Bard has the major advantage of huge datasets from its search engine and real-time access to the internet. It is very clear that Google is going to expand  Bard to its best potential.
